Jacques Ehlers was born in 1971 in Bloemhof in the Western Transvaal (now known as the North West Province), where he attended school up to Standard Eight (Grade 10) level. He matriculated from the Potchefstroom Gymnasium in 1989 after which he completed his one year National Service at the Danie Theron Combat School in Potchefstroom. He then joined the Intelligence School as an instructor on a two year contract.

He joined the Military Academy (Faculty of Military Science of Stellenbosch University) in Saldanha in 1993 and obtained his B.Mil degree in 1995. Together with his wife Marie, whom he met while at the Academy, they relocated to the Eastern Province Command in Port Elizabeth during 1996, where they remained to the end of 1999.

During the year 2000 they were transferred to the Intelligence Regiment in Potchefstroom and in 2001 he commenced with his LL.B studies at the University of the North West, Potchefstroom campus. On 31 July 2001 he resigned from the Defence Force and they relocated to Port Elizabeth where he continued with his studies on a full time basis. He was awarded the Baccalaureus Legum degree in 2005, and he entered into articles of clerkship with Greyvensteins Nortier in Port Elizabeth.

He was admitted as an attorney on 22 February 2007 and as a Conveyancer and Notary on 29 May 2009. He practiced as a Professional Assistant at various firms and in December 2011 he accepted a Professional Assistant position with Brits and Pretorius Attorneys in Piketberg, where he remained until the tragic passing of the sole owner of the firm Mr Piet Pretorius. This necessitated the establishment of a new practice by Jacques and consequently Jacques Ehlers Attorneys was registered with the Cape Law Society on 1 August 2013. The practice opened on 5 August 2013.

Despite the fact that he is a general legal practitioner, he has a definite interest in property law (he is currently studying towards a LL.M degree in property law) and in particular conveyancing and notarial work.

He spends his free time playing golf and spending time with his wife and two Spaniels, Jessie and Bruno.
